Reconstruction Scientist (PET)

SUMMARY OF POSITION

CMRU has an immediate opening for a Reconstruction Scientist in the PET Image Reconstruction & Physics Group. We work on current and next generation PET image reconstruction algorithms, physical corrections, image quality assessment and machine learning approaches in support of Canon’s Molecular Imaging business. Both experienced and entry-level candidates will be considered depending on the applicant’s qualifications.

Candidates are expected to have a background in image reconstruction, with preference for experience in PET, SPECT or CT and will contribute to our research and advanced development of new reconstruction methods. The qualified candidate will use simulation, phantom experiments and clinical data to evaluate ideas. Publications and presentations at conferences is encouraged. We provide technical support to the engineering, product and regulatory teams in order to see our ideas and prototypes through to the clinic.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development of new image reconstruction algorithms, as well as the management and improvement of existing image reconstruction algorithms.
  • Solid understanding of the workings of physical corrections in the image reconstruction chain such as attenuation, scatter, randoms and deadtime corrections.
  • Prototype software implementation, e.g. in C, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Generation of datasets both via realistic simulations as well as phantom scans.
  • Initiative to propose meaningful projects, collaborative support of others projects. Critique and debate in a positive and supporting environment.
  • Effective written and oral communication of your work to other group members, the broader company, and our scientific field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field including image reconstruction experience.

Experience

  • Direct experience with PET scanners, clinical PET and/or algorithm development a plus.
  • Industry experience, preferably in a product development environment a plus.

Key Competencies

  • Expertise in image reconstruction algorithms.
  • Expertise in data corrections, the image generation chain, and overall, PET system.
  • Rigor in defining problems, designing experiments and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Familiarity with common programming languages, including C, MATLAB, and Python, as well as software development practices.
  • Strong oral and written communicator and collaborator.
  • Ability to deal with deadlines for projects, conferences and code releases.

Time and Location Commitment

  • The position is a regular, full-time and requires a commitment of 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday, during regular business hours.
  • The position is based in CMRU’s home office in Vernon Hills (Chicago), Illinois.
  • A hybrid work schedule will allow flexibility to work remotely from home on some days and from the office on other days, but the candidate must be able to come on-site daily based on the needs of the projects and business requirements.

Travel

  • The ability to complete domestic and international travel is expected up to 10% of the time.
